In this anthology our six retold fairy tales present alternate versions of well known stories, delivering enjoyable life lessons to the reader. In Matthew Sylvester’s story a futuristic soldier makes a choice that extends his life, but for a limited period. In Ed Ahern’s story the stereotypes of Prince and Princess are wonderfully subverted, just as Jennifer Loring teaches us not to judge a book by its cover. Nancy Brashear tells us a dark version of Hansel and Gretel, whilst Ed Fortune shows, through the eyes of Dick Whittington, that all that glitters is not gold. And in Stewart Hotston’s lesson for us is . . beware a fool’s bargain. So step in and enjoy these brand new twisted fairy tales.

Grimm and Grimmer

Grimm & Grimmer is a continuing series of volumes – each containing six stories – which reimagine old Grimm (and other) fairytales for the modern reader. Like traditional fairytales, these stories are generally sharp, short and contain a twist. These are fresh tales intended to have some resonance with a modern audience. From ‘Cinderella’ to ‘Snow White’, ‘Hansel and Gretel’ to ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’, there are a wealth of stories to be revisited.

Grimm & Grimmer is currently closed to new submissions.

Stories should be between 1,500 and 4,000 words. While we are looking for new and original twists on this theme with surprising elements, we are not looking for new stories that just happen to involve old characters. This is about reimagining old tales for new readers. Be fun, be serious, but most of all be unique.

Submissions should be sent to submissions@fringeworks.co.uk as word documents or rtf files. Your email subject header should read ‘SURNAME/GRIMM/WORD COUNT (include word count)

All submissions should:

– Be 1,500 to 4,000 words (max)

– Be typed in Courier or Times New Roman 12

– Be typed in line with Standard Manuscript Format. Details can be found at http://www.shunn.net/format/story.html

– Be presented in British English.

– Include your full details (name/address/telephone number/email address)

Previously published stories will NOT be considered for this anthology, and while authors will retain copyright we expect all new characters created for this anthology to be placed within the public domain.

Multiple submissions up to a maximum of two stories per author can be submitted.

We will write to you within approximately four weeks of the submission deadline to let you know if you have been successful.

We will pay 12% royalties after costs per story published in each book only.
