THE ENDS OF THE EARTH

End of the Earth

A DOUGLAS ADAMS MEMORIAL ANTHOLOGY

Imagine the year is 1976, and you are an extremely tall, not very successful sketch writer who, when asked by radio producer Simon Brett if you had any ideas for a radio series, has come up with a series of six half-hour comedy shows, each of which would feature the destruction of the Earth, all for an entirely different reason. Your proposal was called “The end of the Earth.”

Now imagine that, after copious amounts of tea, innumerable baths and a dozen missed deadlines, you came up with more than one idea. Now imagine that you are writing up an idea that didn’t become more famous as a radio show called “The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy”.

Instead of a half-hour radio script (although you can write that too, or instead, if you like) you are producing it in the form of prose – a five to eight thousand word short story.

That is the premise of The Ends of the Earth, a comic fantasy anthology intended to raise funds for The Environmental Investigations Agency. EIA is one of two charities for whom the Douglas Adams Memorial Lectures are held (the Other being Save the Rhino), and was a charity supported by Douglas Adams.

The Rules: The story must be comedic (preferably satirical) and fast-paced. It should feature original characters and situations. It should not be a parody of the works of Douglas Adams, although postmodernist reference is encouraged. It may share some concepts, such as pace, style and tone, but should stand alone as an independent piece of work.

While we are primarily looking to commission stories, we are open to expressions of interest from established writers or persons with a significant connection to Douglas Adams. We are also looking for crowdfunding partners/supporters to pursue associated projects.

Correspondence should be sent to adrian@fringeworks.co.uk rather than through our submissions address.

Watch this space – we will update as we go along.
